Screenwriter of Lady Macbeth Tapped to Rewrite Taylor Swift’s Feature Directorial Debut

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Alice Birch, the screenwriter of Lady Macbeth, has been brought on to rewrite the script for Taylor Swift’s first feature film as a director. In December 2022, Swift announced that she would write and direct a feature-length project in collaboration with Disney and Searchlight Pictures.

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Swift approached Birch — who also penned Prime Video’s Dead Ringers — to revise her script. Such a move is not unusual in Hollywood, where screenplays are sometimes rewritten more than ten times.

Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Killers of the Flower Moon) has previously praised Swift as a “great director,” while Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy went so far as to compare the pop star to Steven Spielberg.

Swift, who has directed 18 of her own music videos, is not inexperienced behind the camera, but feature filmmaking brings unique challenges. It appears the 35-year-old singer is most concerned about the screenplay and has concluded that she cannot complete it on her own.

No title or release date has yet been announced for Swift’s feature debut, but with Birch now attached, casting is expected to begin soon.
